Digital License Plates Soon to Hit Florida

By Vivian El-Salawy on May 10, 2018

Digital license plates are said to be the upcoming fad in the state of Florida, and could potentially save taxpayers millions of dollars. Already used in the state of California, a company by the name of Reviver Auto has developed electronic license plates, called Rplates.

Rplates transform the 125-year-old stamped metal vehicle license plate to a futuristic, multifunctional digital, electronic display with a variety of functions. According to Reviver Auto, these new license plates are a “a cool-looking, multi-functional digital display and connected vehicle platform, delivering multiple efficiencies to businesses, government agencies and consumers”.

According to ABC News, the new plates are soon to be available in Arizona, Texas, and Florida, and CEO Neville Boston said the company is working to legalize them in at least nine other states by the end of 2018.

These license plates are efficient for consumers in many ways. For one, consumers will never have to wait in a long line at a DMV ever again, as they will be able to renew their tag digitally through the plate. The plate works similarly to that of a tablet, and the stickers can be replaced online each year. Additionally, when it comes to customization, whether a consumer wants to represent a worthy cause, their alma mater, or any other unique customization that is usually processed through the DMV, this can simply be done digitally and instantly as well.

Additional features include the ability to display whether or not a consumer has paid for parking in lots that require parking fees, and advertisements that will display when the vehicle is parked. Ideally, this new license plate will save taxpayers millions of dollars. According to representatives in California, the state has already saved nearly 20 million dollars on postage alone.

“The rPlate is the first ever ‘fifth screen’ or digital signage platform to grace the back of a vehicle and can be installed as an aftermarket product or seamlessly integrated directly into the design of the vehicle,” said Allan Cooper, another Reviver executive. “It can display hyper-local targeted messages to a captive audience when a vehicle is legally parked in any location.” -Consumer Affairs

However, these digital plates cost around $700 – so the question that remains is, is it worth it? Additionally, there have been expressions of concern regarding the safety of these devices. With distracted driving already being one of the driving factors of automobile accidents, would digital license plates contribute to that statistic?

In regard to whether or not these license plates would still be as recognizable by cameras and so on, the Rplates are designed to be clear to read and visible regardless of weather conditions, and are tamper-proof with built-in anti-theft features. Reviver Auto also currently offers three service plans, with various features: premium, elite, and business. Details of those service plans can be located on their website.
